Blog 4 - Analysis of Opening Sequences

I watched the opening sequences of two teen horror movies, Jennifers body and Sorority row. The two films have some similarities as being teen horror they are trying to apply to the same audience. The lead roles of the two films are played by women which are similar ages, either at high school/college. In the two films relationships are shown, both films have friendships included. The two films use informal language to connect with the audience as they use slang. The two films opening both include creepy music to build suspense also they both start with a dark house.

However the two films have differences they use different techniques to build suspense in Soroity row lighting and music is used and in Jennifers body darkness and flash back is used. The two set ups of the films are different in Sorority row you are watching the event unfold whereas in Jennifers body the event has already happened and you are being retold the story by one of the characters using a flashback. In Jennifers body there is boyfriend and girlfriend relationship, Soroity row has an ex-boyfriend and girlfriend relationship.

Blog 3 - Institutional Contexts

Jennifers body was part created by the company Fox Atomic which is a production label from 20th century fox. 20th century fox is a well known production label therefore allows there films to have large budgets. Other films produced by this label are other teen and horror films.
Sorority row was part created by Summit entertainment, Summit entertainment is respnsible for releasing twilight and since then has made many succesful films, the other films they have produced have been quite dark. Summit entertainments success enables them to have large budgets for their films.

Jennifers body and Sorority row were released at similar times, both within the months of september -november, so the dark winter months near halloween. The budget for theses two films were $16,000,000. On the opening weekend in America of Jennifers body it earned $6,868,397 and Sorority row earned $5,059,802. Jennifers body has so far made $32,832,166 and Sorority row has made $27,195,919.

Due to these factors of the two films i have analysed i will have the release date around october time and think about how a large budget would impact my film and how that budget would make it a good teen horror.

Blog 2 - Target Audience

Jennifers body and Sorority row have the same target audience as they are both teen horror films. The typical audience for these two films would be mainstreamers, they want to see big produced hollywood movies and as they are teen horros the two films would be aiming at teenagers/young adults from the age of 15-21. When looking at the user ratings from both films, you can clearly identify what age group enjoyed the film more.

Jennifers body had a large amount of votes from males however recieved a low rating, whereas females voted less but gave a higher rating compared to males. The highest rating of the film came from the under 18 category and the 18-29 female category. The majority of vates came from the 18-29 category however the film was rated low.

Sorority row - user ratings
Sorority row recieved most votes from a male audience and like Jennifers body rated the film with a low rating.  The majority of the votes for Sorority row came from the 18-29 category however recieved a low rating. The highest percentage came from females aged 45+, but not alot of people from that category voted, this shows that most of them rated the film 5-8, this is the same for the boys category aged under 18, they too gave Sorority row a high rating but few people voted.
